Who we are
Queensland Migrant WorkWise (QMWW) is a free education and information program that supports temporary migrant workers across Queensland.
With around 80,000 migrants and refugees contributing to the state's workforce, many industries depend on their skills to meet critical labour shortages. But some challenges persist.
Workers on temporary visas are more vulnerable to workplace exploitation—often due to unfamiliarity with Australian laws, cultural and language barriers, and restrictive visa conditions.
Research by the Migrant Workers Centre shows nearly two-thirds of migrant workers have experienced wage theft in Australia, while one-in-four have reported other forms of exploitation, such as being denied breaks, pushed into excessive overtime, or told to do unsafe work.
That's where we come in. QMWW empowers migrant workers by helping them understand and enforce their workplace rights.
Our services include:
-
Delivering information sessions on workplace rights and visa protections
-
Providing multilingual resources and access to interpreter services
-
Connecting workers with union support to resolve workplace issues
-
Offering employer toolkits and information to foster inclusive workplaces
-
Referring workers to confidential immigration advice and services
With a team of six outreach officers working across metropolitan, regional and remote Queensland, we ensure support reaches migrant workers wherever they are.
QMWW is funded by the Department of Home Affairs and is delivered by the Queensland Council of Unions.
We are also supported through partnerships with the Migrant Workers Centre in Victoria and the Immigration Advice and Rights Centre in New South Wales.
Together, we're building fairer, safer workplaces for all.
